Not the worst false equivalence I’ve seen...

I like how they mention bore stroke but not bhp or torque.

After owning an Accord of that vintage, I can and have choose the Spirit/Acclaim every time, they’re far nicer/more comfortable places to spend time.

I still see countless SLs on the road; couldn't tell you the last time I saw a Granada.

The base engine is only 90 hp shy of the Merc. It’s only 10 ft-lbs between them though.

I’d take a Spirit RT over most things from that decade.

True.

Although I’m partial to the V6s.

I have only dabbled with one V6, the KLDE from a 95 Mazda 626.  I stuffed it into a 95 Ford Aspire.  It was a hoot and a half, but sadly rotted out shortly after the swap.

I still see Accords that old driving around on a semi-regular basis. Meanwhile, it’s once every couple months or so that I see one of those Pentastar-logo  Chrysler’s.

Dodge Shadow,  the sporty coupe version don’t wait for the turbo to spool, you might miss the light.

I’ve dabbled with plenty of the 6g72 powered Mopars. They aren’t much to write home about in stock form, but are smooth, quiet, efficient, and have gobs of torque. They do however come alive with minor mods, just simple intake, plenum porting, tb, and better exhaust nets 30 hp/20ft-lbs on the dyno over stock numbers.

That’s really good gains for low dollars.  Did you read about the turbo version that was made at Chrysler?  The guy was tasked with just killing the thing, and he had a moderately hard time doing it.

That’s why early Mopars are great cars to get into toying with vehicles.

You mean this one? https://www.allpar.com/history/interviews/marc-rozman/6-exploding-turbo-33.html

I’ve dug deeper on this engine and it turns out they were running it at low revs, 100% load for the majority of that 78 hrs on the dyno. Realistically that engine held up amazingly. People have since added boost to the 3.0, 3.3, and 3.8, all of which handle low boost without issue.

I know your mopar love runs deep but to meet someone who genuinely prefers a Dodge Spirit over a 90’s Honda (peak Honda too, the  era of Honda that made me dabble in FWD) is amazing. Also your mention of the power gains from these old mopars is frickin NUTS

The Honda may “run” forever, but if you actually drive one back to back with a Spirit ES, the Honda just feels like a cheap tin can. The Spirit is far more comfortable, far smoother, and far quieter inside.

I know the “thing” is to hate on 90s domestics, but I’ve been in plenty of 90s vehicles from both sides, I always find the “foreign” cars to just feel cheap, regardless of their perceived reliability ( even that is questionable to me ) .

Stock numbers are 141hp/173ft-lbs at the flywheel.

This car had 3" exhaust, a ported plenum, and a bigger tb. It made 146whp, 166wtq, which is roughly 173 hp/196 ft-lbs at the flywheel. Pretty impressive gains for 3 simple mods.

I haven’t been inside much 90’s domestic stuff that I would remember outside of J bodies, and I don’t think it’s fair to use those to describe all 90’s domestics so I can’t speak from experience. That being said the switchgear and touch surfaces in the 90’s Hondas I’ve had is much nicer than in my Volvo ( 240). But I also drove around without inner door panels and it didn’t bother me so I think we like different things. I also like my cars to be upfront with me about their tin-can ness. I can’t  imagine a Dodge spirit would be substantially better in crash tests, but I could be wrong!

And I don’t get the rep for reliability these Hondas   have.  after awhile they burn oil, trans problems manual or otherwise, and they rust like nobodies business so you can barely work on them yourself. Also the dreaded previous owners.....
